RRB Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) Medical Standards: Vision & Lasik Surgery Guidelines

A-1 Medical Fitness Requirements

The medical examination for RRB Assistant Loco Pilot is among the most demanding in public service, strictly demanding A-1 Medical Fitness.

Because loco pilots control high-speed passenger and freight rail corridors, absolute physical and sensory fitness is non-negotiable.

Distant (6/6) & Near Vision Standards

Distant vision must be 6/6, 6/6 without glasses or contact lenses. No corrective spectacles are permitted for locomotive operations under any circumstances.

Near vision must measure Sn. 0.6, 0.6 without glasses.

Color Perception & Ishihara Plate Testing

Loco pilots must accurately identify signal lights (Red, Amber, Green) through rain, fog, and nighttime operations.

Full color perception is tested using standardized Ishihara 38-plate charts. Any degree of color blindness causes immediate rejection.

Lasik & Refractive Surgery Restrictions

Any history of Lasik, PRK, or refractive eye surgery causes immediate disqualification. Railway ophthalmologists conduct slit-lamp corneal inspections to detect refractive scars.

Corneal topography scans are mandatory during appeal reviews.

Medical Board Appeal & Second Review Procedure

Candidates declared unfit may submit an appeal within 21 days along with a certificate from a government civil surgeon and a nominal appeal fee.

A three-member Apex Railway Medical Board conducts the final re-examination.
